Cupcakes have a long history dating back to 1796 when a cookbook by Amelia Simmons included a recipe for a light cake, which she baked in small cup-sized ramekins. A second theory is that the term “cup cake” referred to a cake recipe written in cups that later evolved into the word cupcake.
