Cupcakes have a long history dating back to 1796 when a cookbook by Amelia Simmons included a recipe for a light cake which was to be baked in small cup sized ramekins. A second theory is that originally the term “cup cake” referred to a cake the recipe which was written in cups rather than in a metric system.
